What is a professional organizer?
(as defined by the National Association
of Professional Organizers – NAPO)
A professional organizer enhances the lives of clients
by designing systems and processes using organizing principles and
through transferring organizing skills. A professional organizer
also educates the public on organizing solutions and the resulting
benefits.
What do professional organizers do?
Professional organizers serve residential and business
clients and can provide a large variety of skills and services.
Their services range from home and business organizing to information
and time management, event and project management, relocation assistance,
and coaching and training.
How long will it take?
That depends on many factors: what you’re
trying to address, how quickly you make decisions, your energy level
and attention span, your budget and schedule. Some people get a
jump start with a single session and are off and running on their
own, while others need or prefer multiple sessions spread out over
time to complete the project.
Once we’ve met for an initial session it will
be easier to answer this question more specifically. (See "How
I Work" on the SERVICES page.)
How much does it cost?
Again, that depends. Fees vary according to geographic
area, the organizer’s level of training and experience, and
other factors.
My fees are based on several variables, including
the length of the session, whether you are a residential or business
client, how far I need to travel, how often we meet. Please call
me for a free initial phone consultation so we can discuss this
further. (See the CONTACT page.)
Do I have to do anything to get ready for you?
No. In order to help you with your needs, I need
to see things as they are currently – however messy or disorganized.
This may be hard, but it’s the best way to help us come up
with individualized solutions that will work for you.
Will you make me throw things away?
Never. I am there to help you make decisions, offer
ideas and suggestions. You will always be in charge of what you
want and need to do. Even if I think something could be tossed,
you will always be the one to make all final decisions.
- For most of us, it’s hard to know where to begin.
- You may not know what you need to keep or can throw away (as
in paperwork).
- It’s easy to get tangled up in the myriad issues related
to one item. For example, your grandmother gave you an heirloom.
You don’t like it and don’t want it around. But you
don’t want to hurt her feelings. Or, you know you want to
give it away but want to donate it to a place worthy of its value.
And so on. Before you know it, you’re stuck on this one
decision and the project comes to a halt.
- It’s easy to get distracted.
- As a professional without any personal investment or attachment
to your things, I bring a kind of objectivity and perspective
that can help you with all these issues. While helping you with
the work I am also an observer of the process. I can tell when
you are stuck or have gotten distracted, and can offer support
that will help you get back on track and keep moving forward.
Once you have more functional systems in place, you are better
able to organize yourself; you can then use me and/or someone
else to help you maintain what you started.
What is special about your approach?
My training and experience as a psychotherapist
are definite assets in my work with clients. My approach helps most
clients feel safe and comfortable with me soon after we meet. I
am able to bring a deep level of attention and listening to our
relationship and am tolerant and patient. I am able to quickly assess
what is going on with my clients on many levels – externally
and internally – which allows me to customize solutions that
will be a good fit for them. (See the ABOUT
page for more about Yvonne's background and qualifications.)
